The Buddy
Holly Center invites you to view rarely seen images of early rock ’n’ roll
musicians in On the Road: Photographs by Lew Allen February 1
– April 2, 2005 in the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame. The exhibit will
include images of several major rock musicians and songwriters such as Elvis
Presley, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, and more. On February 3, 2005
from 5:30 – 6:30 pm, join Lew Allen for a personally guided tour of the
exhibit.
At the age of seventeen, Lew Allen attended and captured with his camera
various concerts that helped document the birth of early rock ‘n’ roll. He
eventually gained unprecedented access to the backstage area at three other
concerts: one when Elvis visited Cleveland, Ohio in 1956, one “Rock Party”
concert in 1958, and another at the Rochester War Memorial in 1959. The
managers of the later Rock Party concerts were so impressed with images by
Allen they encouraged him to go back to the theater and take photographs on
assignment. He was granted admittance from legendary musicians to shoot
anywhere he pleased- on or off stage.
Allen is currently a professional photographer residing in Rochester, New
York. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology where he trained
under famed photographer Minor White. Perfectly capturing the emerging
spirit of early rock, Lew Allen’s imagery details a part of music history
that would otherwise be lost.
