Procesión
October 28, 2006

Lubbock, TX– The Buddy Holly Center would like to invite the public to join the citywide Procesión celebrating the Mexican holiday, Día de los muertos or Day of the Dead.  Procesión is a four-site progressive celebration on October 28, 2006 that will travel between the TTU International Cultural Center, TTU School of Art, Underwood Center for the Arts and the Buddy Holly Center.  Each location will have artwork commemorating the meaning of the ancient holiday, and there will be entertainment throughout the evening.  At the Buddy Holly Center Procesión will serve as the opening reception for Celebraciόn, an annual invitational exhibition of artwork that explores the history and meaning of Día de los muertos.  Join the community in observing this traditional Mexican holiday on October 28, 2006 from 5:30 – 10:00 pm.  The schedule for Procesión follows:

  • 5:30-6:30 p.m. International Cultural Center, 601 Indiana. Artwork by area artists and an altar to Steve Irwin and endangered species.
  • 6:30-7:30 p.m. TTU School of Art, 18th and Flint. Student exhibition featuring painting, ceramics and photography.
  • 7:30-8:30 p.m. Louise Hopkins Underwood Center, 6th and Ave K. Altars by Lubbock HS students, Ballet Folklorico, and Mariachi Nueva Generación.
  • 8:30-10:00 p.m. BHC, 1801 Crickets Ave.  Celebración - invitational art exhibition, Aztec dancers, catered food and cash bars.

Procesiόn will be October 28, 2005, from 5:30 –10:00 pm and is free to the public.  Procesiόn will serve as the opening reception for Celebraciόn, with the Buddy Holly Center providing refreshments and entertainment for the party.  The Center has invited Ixcalli In Nanantzin, Aztec Dancers from Taos, New Mexico to perform in the Meadows Courtyard between 8:30 – 10:00 pm in commemoration of the holiday’s Aztec roots.  Festivities will continue at other citywide locations throughout the night with In the Dead of the Night hosted by La Diosa Cellars and Art Depot Gallery.
