Cultural Conversation & Closing Reception
All Tomorrow's
Parties:
The Velvet Underground & Andy Warhol
October 6, 2005,
6:30 pm
The Buddy Holly Center would like to invite the public to enjoy a Cultural
Conversation on The Velvet Years, 1965-1967 Warhol’s Factory,
a traveling exhibition from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On October 6,
2005 at 6:30 pm, Shelby Morrison, Curatorial & Collections Assistant at
the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, will enlighten us with
discussion on the impact of the Velvet Underground and the influence of Andy
Warhol on the band’s musical and commercial development. Fine arts of all
genres and the birth of new musical genres were especially prevalent during
the turbulent 1960’s, the decade that originated Stephen Shore’s photos in
The Velvet Years exhibit. The Gallery Talk, All
Tomorrow’s Parties: The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol will
explore the creation and historical impact of the music of the Velvet
Underground and the art that infused and inspired their body of work.
Join patrons in welcoming Shelby Morrison to the Buddy Holly Center and
celebrating The Velvet Years on October 6, 2005 at 6:30 pm.
The following night on October 7, 2005 from 6:00 – 9:00, the Buddy Holly
Center will host the closing reception for The Velvet Years.
The collection of Shore’s photographs will be on display through October 8,
2005 in the Buddy Holly Center’s Fine Arts Gallery. The photographs
record Warhol’s involvement with the Velvet Underground, whom he promoted
during this time period.
The Velvet Years
Closing Reception
October 7, 2005 -
6:00 - 9:00 pm
In conjunction with October's 1st Friday Art Trail!
The
Buddy Holly Center is thrilled to invite the public to enjoy a Closing
Reception for The Velvet Years, 1965-1967 Warhol’s Factory,
a traveling exhibition from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Reception will be held on October 7, 2005 from 6:00 –
9:00 pm in conjunction with October’s First Friday Art Trail. Join fine art
patrons and Art Trailers in enjoying the end of this exciting exhibit. Mike
Pritchard’s band The Hat Trick will provide live entertainment in the
courtyard, and the evening will be opened with the Prophets of Rockabilly.
Both bands will be celebrating the music of the 60’s and 70’s.
The
collection of photographs taken by Stephen Shore will be on display through
October 8, 2005 in the Fine Arts Gallery. Shore was a regular at Warhol’s
Factory during 1965-1967, where he captured the cusp of Warhol’s emergence
as a prominent visual artist and filmmaker. The Velvet Underground was a
huge part of Warhol’s scene, and he is credited with galvanizing their
career and promoting them through his multi-media show, the Exploding
Plastic Inevitable. Warhol even designed the cover of their first album, a
peelable illustration of a banana. The Velvet Years captures
a time when Warhol worked closely with The Velvet Underground, feeding his
own filmmaking career and their musical journey at the same time.
Come and enjoy fine art and refreshments at the Closing Reception for
The Velvet Years October 7, 2005 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. The
opening reception for West Texas Music: A Century of Celebration, a
symposium of the Lubbock Music Festival, will be held at the Buddy Holly
Center at the same time as the Closing Reception for the Velvet Years.
Speakers and participants of the symposium will be enjoying the live music
and fun alongside patrons of the Buddy Holly Center.
